Jim Creek Workday
Join the SLV chapter of Trout Unlimited for our annual work-day on Jim Creek Saturday June 13th, 2020 at 9:00 am.
This year we will be planting riparian sedges and willows on recently restored sections of Jim Creek, performing our annual riparian fence maintenance tasks, and assisting with CPW in an electrofishing removal effort to relocate brook trout from Jim Creek to La Jara Creek below the reservoir.
This year things will be a little different due to the COVID-19 pandemic and we will be practicing social distancing and following the most current guidance for working safely in this remote location. At a minimum, we will require PPE and for folks to bring their own food and water. A detailed plan will be provided to volunteers well ahead of the event. Please do not feel any pressure to participate.
Jim Creek is a tributary stream to La Jara Reservoir and home to an important conservation population of Rio Grande Cutthroat trout. To get there, follow the signs to La Jara Reservoir from the 90 degree turn on County RD 15 in Capulin, Colorado. Or, enter La Jara Reservoir as your destination in Google maps (download ahead for out of service use)! Once at the reservoir, turn left and drive across the creek below the dam. Then keep veering right to get to the camp area and park by the vault toilet. We will plan to start at 9:00am.
Bring clothes for all kinds of weather, as it changes quickly and often. Those who would like to assist with electrofishing need to bring waders. Bring your own camping equipment if you want to camp (free camping) and bring work gloves, a day pack, and two containers for drinking water.
There is usually plenty of time to sneak in some quality high-country recreation so please bring your own toys. A fly rod is essential, but the area is fantastic for trail running, mountain biking, paddle boarding or boating, and motorized trail riding is an option too.
Please RSVP with Kevin Terry by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org or calling 970-799-7682.
