Help protect your native Rio Grande Cutthroat trout

June 8, 2019 @ 10:00 am - 5:00 pm

Rio Grand Cutthroat Trout

Join the SLV chapter of Trout Unlimited on Saturday June 8th 2019, for a day of fence mending and willow planting on Jim Creek. SLV TU has been working on this stream for over 5 years! Work begins at 10:00 am but feel free to come and go as you please. There are 3 nice streams in the area, so don’t forget your fly rod! This event coincides with a volunteer effort hosted by Running Rivers and a large group will be camping Saturday night if you would like to stay and have a few beers!

Jim Creek is a tributary stream to La Jara Reservoir and home to an important conservation population of Rio Grande Cutthroat trout. To get there, follow the signs to La Jara Reservoir from the 90 degree turn on County RD 15 in Capulin. Or, enter La Jara Reservoir as your destination in Google maps! Once at the reservoir, turn left and drive across the creek below the dam. Then keep veering right to skirt around the reservoir shore and follow the bumpy road up Jim Creek. Look for a sliver Tacoma with a “Protect our Rivers” license plate.

Bring clothes for all kinds of weather, as it changes quickly and often. Also bring drinking water, lunch and work gloves. Fencing pliers and other fence building tools will be helpful too, but SLV TU has a decent cache of tools to provide!

Please RSVP with Kevin Terry by emailing terrykev@gmail.com or calling 970-799-7682.
